What I Love — The Papillon, Dainel Roth’s last hurrah from 1998, in 2000, the company was sold to Bulgari, with the watchmaker no longer being involved from that point onwards.
“The Papillon was released to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Daniel Roth manufacture. Though the watchmaker had been increasingly less involved in the brand from 1995 onwards, he took an active role in the design of the Papillon, to mark this historic milestone. It is understood that this was Roth's last creation for the eponymous brand.” A Collected Man
Daniel Roth was one of the defining names of independent watchmaking in the 1990s, standing alongside legends such as Franck Muller, Roger Dubuis, and François-Paul Journe.
This particular watch showcases multiple guilloché patterns across the dial, executed with exceptional precision and preserved in outstanding condition. The two-minute pointers rotate around the center, while the jumping hour mechanism is crisp, engaging, and immediately eye-catching. On the wrist, the design feels both elegant and restrained—beautiful without excess.
The case appears unpolished, with extremely sharp lugs and perfectly preserved hallmarks, further underscoring its originality.
Turning the watch over reveals guilloché decoration on the rotor, along with the matching numbering “36/110” engraved on both the rotor and the case. As the numbering suggests, this reference was produced in a highly limited run of just 110 pieces, exclusively in white gold.
What You Should Know — Some light scratches on the back of 2 lugs from previous strap changes. The watch is head only and comes with a generic pin buckle. Minor hairlines across the case only, nothing major to report.
