Circa 1990's Vacheron Constantin Mercator 43050
What We Love
he Vacheron Constantin Mercator ref. 43050 was introduced in 1994 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of famed cartographer Gerardus Mercator. Produced for just ten years, it is believed that only 638 examples were made across all variations, making the Mercator one of the most distinctive and elusive modern Vacheron Constantin references.
At 4 o’clock, a subtle “J&L Genbrugge” engraving pays tribute to the husband-and-wife enameling duo who first envisioned the project, an unusually personal detail for a big Brand to make.
Condition-wise, this example represents exactly what I hope to see from a watch like this. The stepped bezel and sculpted lugs retain their original factory finish, while the engravings on the caseback remain deep and crisp throughout. Over time, the yellow gold case has developed a rich rosy hue with vivid purple tones emerging around the lugs and edges, giving the watch great warmth and character.
The dial is beautifully preserved. Crafted from solid gold, it combines fine engraving with chemical etching to create the cartographic motif. This particular example depicts Europe, Africa, and Asia, originally drawn by Mercator himself rendered with remarkable detail and texture.
Turning the watch over reveals the Vacheron Constantin Caliber 1120, derived from the well known Jaeger-LeCoultre 920 with a retrograde mechanism developed specifically for the Mercator. The rotor is hand engraved with “1594 – Gerardus Mercator – 1994,” commemorating the anniversary that inspired the model.
The watch is further accompanied by its original Vacheron Constantin deployant clasp.
What You Should Know
This watch is a true patina monster. The case has developed strong rosy and vivid purple coloration throughout, particularly around the lugs and case edges. It will not be for everyone, but for collectors who appreciate honest aging and untouched conditions, it is exactly the kind of character that I love to see. The watch also shows light hairlines throughout from careful wear over time.
