Circa 1975 Patek Philippe 9508 Green Enamel Lighter Khanjar Signed
What We Love
Super rare and niche offering from Patek Philippe that formed part of a wider Ellipse accessory range.
Produced in the late 1970s, Patek created a small run of 18k gold lighters to accompany the iconic Ellipse collection. Online research suggests each piece was crafted from a solid block of 18k gold and hand-finished to an exceptional standard, with the movement supplied by Colibri (external maker).
It is generally accepted that between 200 and 400 examples were made, with a variety of engraved and guilloché finishes. A small number were further enhanced with enamel decoration in blue, red, or green, such as the present example.
Examples are known bearing the Khanjar, Oman’s national emblem, most notably on pieces associated with the court of Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said. These highly personalised variants are widely believed to have been used as presentation pieces.
Fewer than 60 Patek Philippe lighters have surfaced publicly, and examples combining enamel decoration with the Khanjar motif remain among the most desirable. This exact lighter was last offered publicly at Phillips, Geneva, in November 2020, lot here.
