2002 Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph 3970EG White Gold Box And Papers
What We Love
One of the most recognisable complications ever produced by Patek Philippe, the perpetual calendar chronograph is a huge part of the brand’s identity. The history and design language behind these references are incredibly well documented, and it’s always exciting to have one come through the door, especially as we haven’t had many.
This is a 4th series Patek Philippe Ref. 3970 in white gold, a configuration seen far less often than its yellow gold counterpart and one that rarely appears for sale. Recently I’ve noticed a growing gap in market perception between the earlier 2nd series white metal examples and the later 3rd and 4th series watches. Personally, I think these later examples, especially when complete like this, make for a really interesting proposition now the price gap is so large. Yes, the design feels slightly more modern and production numbers were higher, but it’s still an objectively beautiful watch (very beautiful watch!).
This example presents wonderfully. The case retains strong hallmarks, the side lug profile is well preserved, and the shimmer-like dial is absolutely pristine. I’ve really grown to appreciate the soft white/off-white tone of these dials, the type font and variety of textures/finishes present. The watch comes complete with the all-important solid second case back, along with its original papers, serialized outer sleeve envelope, boxset and pusher pin from new.
It’s one of those watches that immediately feels special when worn, and honestly, I’ve enjoyed having this one around quite a bit.
What You Should Know
There are light signs of use throughout, but nothing major to report. I would say the watch has likely seen a light polish in the past.
