What We Love
One of the rarest production variants of the 3970, the platinum second-series marked the first time the reference was offered in platinum, with just 10–15 examples thought to have ever been produced. To put that into perspective, around 100 first-series watches were made, a fair amount more. That makes these platinum second-series examples exceptionally scarce and firmly among the rarest 3970s ever produced.
Starting with the dial, it presents in near-immaculate condition with a beautiful ‘shimmer-like’ finish. The crisp typography, English-language calendar discs, feuille-style hands and early rectangular hour markers give it all the charm of the earlier perpetual calendar chronographs that came before it. It’s a wonderfully vintage-looking dial despite being firmly in the neo-vintage period.
The case has been preserved superbly, with perfectly defined lug profiles, crisp ‘small’ hallmarks and very little wear to report. Quite simply one of the nicest platinum 3970 cases we’ve seen. The bright platinum paired with the shimmering dial is an absolutely stunning combination in the metal.
The watch is accompanied by its all-important Certificate of Origin, box set, platinum deployant clasp and pin pusher.
What You Should Know
The watch is running well with all functions operating exactly as they should. For complete peace of mind, we can also arrange a complimentary mechanical service through Patek Philippe following the sale should the buyer wish.
There is a surface scratch on the bottom right lug, it doesn’t interfere with the intricate lug profile in any way.
The white gold deployant is later added, not a biggie but worth noting. Correct platinum pin buckle can be sourced in time if desired.
