2021 Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar 3940J 'Off Catalogue' Vintage Collection
What We Love
For a 3940-obsessed dealer and collector, this is somewhat of a dream come true. I’m totally blown away to be able to offer one of, if not the rarest, variants of the 3940: the 3940J-028, pairing a yellow-gold case with a factory black dial.
After months of research, ultimately culminating in the fantastic article by @WatchDilettante, now live on our site, we finally have, as much as possible, a clearer picture of these post-production offerings, their rarity and their importance to collectors.
This example is fresh to market and, I believe, the first to trade outside of auction. Just four examples are currently known to me, with this particular watch dating to 2021, making it one of the very last 3940s ever produced by Patek Philippe.
The condition is exactly what you’d hope for from a watch delivered in 2021, razor sharp and near mint throughout. The dial, though, does most of the talking. It’s incredibly difficult to capture properly, appearing almost completely matte in direct light before transforming indoors into a rich, glossy jet-black finish.
The watch is accompanied by its original (and GIANT) Certificate of Authenticity folder, containing an A4 photograph from Patek Philippe of the watch alongside the certificate itself. Importantly, the second solid caseback remains with the watch, along with its box set and pusher pin.
The Saatchi and Vintage Collection watches are really only beginning to be properly understood. Hopefully, the article published on our site provides as deep a dive as possible into these offerings and brings some much-needed transparency and knowledge to an area that, until recently, was largely surrounded by speculation.
With 5070s and 3970s from these two collections pushing the £800k mark, the 3940 has somewhat remained in the background. Awareness of the 3940 variants beyond the more commonly seen white-gold/salmon configuration remains surprisingly limited, which makes it a real pleasure to finally shine a light on this one.

Light wear from use only.
